Wine of the Month: October 2003

The descriptions found below are the ones you will find with your monthly shipment of two bottles of fine wine from the French Wine Club.

Red: Domaine du Vieux Chêne, Cuvée des Capucins, Côtes du Rhone 2001

This fine property sits along side the wild scrubby “garrigue” land below the Uchaux mountain promontory, northeast of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

The Capucines selection is produced by husband-and-wife team Jean-Claude and Béatrice Bouche. It is a seductive and charming wine, redolent of raspberry and mint, a perfect rendition of the 100% juicy Grenache grapes that are used to make it. On the palate, the wine charms with intense, but not heavy “cassis”-like flavors.

The Cuvée des Capucines is a great accompaniment to spicy Provençale cuisine with grilled meats and vegetables, adorned with sprigs of wild, fresh herbs. Aging is three to four years.

White: Ile La Forge, Viognier 2002, Languedoc-Roussillon

The Domaines Paul Mas consist of several vineyard totaling 60 hectares. Among them, the Ile la Forge covers 10 Hectares of Viognier. At harvesting time every grape is destemed. There a little bit of aging in new oak barrel (20%) but most of it age in stainless steel.

ThisViognier has a bright gold yellow color with straw yellow tints. It is a very elegant wine with a quintessence of dry fruits, peach and floral (violet) aromas with a hint of Acacia honey notes. It is rich, fresh and mellow with a very long persistence, finishing on toasted notes.

Serve it cool with preferably seafood and fish dishes, white meats, blue cheeses. This Viognier will be fruity in its first five years, then the aromas will mature beautifully as it has a very good aging potential.
